Whale Watching In Monterey Bay

Dosed up with Stugeron (anti sea sickness) meds, we set out for our whale watching trip in Monterey Bay, hopeful to see some of these large beautiful mammals in the wild.

The trip was great, we saw about 20 blue whales all in all, various pods all over the bay, we just glimpsed a blow out in the distance and headed that way, then within a few minutes of arriving we saw our first breach!… full on blue whale jumping out of the ocean!!… Wow! what a sight!

There were some calves, along with the much larger adults too, many were tail waving where you can just see their tail come out of the water, then with a small wave, they slide back under the surface.

Many were doing blow outs, where they exhale all their air through the blow hole in their backs, some waved their fins, some did a head bobbing, we even saw a number of breaches over the afternoon, they aren’t exactly light weight animals, so you have to wonder how much strength they have in their tails and bodies to be able to propel themselves that fast that they can leap out of the water?

In some cases we got so close, we could have thrown a fish at one and it could have caught it in it’s mouth!… they were amazing!

Clam Chowder

Clam Chowder

Okay, I finally relented and gave in to my curiosity of what clam chowder actually tasted like.

It wasn’t in a sour dough bread bowl as previously advertised though, as this was right before getting on a boat to go whale watching for about 4 hours, so I thought to make it a light meal… just in case. 😉

I have to say, it wasn’t half bad at all, it actually tasted like a creamy chicken soup and it was even better with some sliced sour dough bread to dip it.
